As life slowly transitions back to normal the Oklahoma Kayak Anglers tournament series is in full swing. Saturday, May 9th the OKA will be hosting its 4th event at Ardmore City lakes in southern Oklahoma. AOY and NOY points, a plaque, door prizes, along with cash prizes for the top 10% of anglers will be on the line. OKA sponsor Amped Outdoors has provided two lithium batteries, hat, and specialty lures to be given away as bonus prizes and door prizes for participating anglers. While temperatures heat up and bass start to transition to post spawn patterns anglers will find themselves in a high stakes battle for #1. The City of Ardmore owns and manages 4 lakes in south central Oklahoma. However, only 3 lakes will be eligible for tournament day. City Lake, Jean Nuestadt, and Scott King lakes.
City Lake within the Ardmore City limits is a small 160 acre lake in the middle of the city. This lake has clear water, rock structure, and multiple types of aquatic vegetation around shorelines. In 2018 OKA angler Avery Metcalf placed 1st and won Big Bass honors with a 22.50" largemouth out of City Lake. However, that day was in early April with 30 mph winds and an air temperature of 30 degrees. "Wind was blowing icy fog across the lake and the fog would freeze on me and my kayak." Metcalf recalls. "It was hard at first to make a cast because my reels and line were frozen." City lake has one boat ramp and a permanent restroom facility.
Located six miles northwest of Ardmore, Scott King lake is a 251 acre reservoir with defined points, drops offs and a creek channel running straight down the center of the lake. Like City lake Scott King has clear water and a lot of aquatic vegetation. Moreover, Scott King does have a few small rock bluffs that line the bank. Scott King Lake by far has the structure diversity any angler needs for big bass.
The biggest of the Ardmore City Lakes is Jean Nuestadt Lake. Built in 1969 this 462 acre lake has all the characteristics of nearby Lake Murray with shallow north end bays and deep banks on the southern end. Interesting enough an episode of Outdoor Oklahoma was filmed on Neustadt in 1995 with legendary BASSMASTER angler Ken Cook. That video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3ofI6wdiRA
