How to Prep for a Tournament

By: Kong Xiong It starts with home work,   jump on the internet and google the lake you are going to.   You need to find the species of fish that are in there as it will influence tackle drastically.   Also, what kind of structure and cover is on that lake; rocks, shoreline grass, docks or standing timber. Time of year is very important too as it will shift your water depth focus. Last but not least, the weather forecast.  If the weather stays consistent  up until tournament day, I feel the fish can be predictable . When you can find the time, you should go pre-fish the lake to confirm this. Finally, If the weather is different everyday, it is going be a junk fishing day.  Just bring the your confidence baits and trust your gut feelings on game day. Regardless, make a plan with your fishing strengths in mind.  I have used these steps of preparation for the Tulsa Kayak Bass-A -Thon Jackpots, Oklahoma Kayak Anglers to the top tier national events like Tournament of Champions, Kayak Bass

4 Lake Slam Recap: Houa Xiong Sweeps The Field

The Oklahoma Kayak Anglers completed their 5th event of the 2020 season this past Saturday and man was it Major League. Anglers from all over the state traveled to 4 small lakes in central, Oklahoma to try their skills at early summer bass. This time of year, normally reserved for the ole American pass time of baseball. However, current events have put a damper on the diamond but certainly not the fishing. Anglers scored 16 bass 20", or better and the top 4 anglers submitting 90", or more. As the scored bass swam sore lipped the OKA hosted the awards at Rudy Alan's Steakhouse in Wewoka. The Steakhouse was as great of an experience for the anglers to get together as the fishing catching home run derby earlier that day.  OKA angler Houa Xiong is no stranger to tournament success as he routinely places high in each tournament and notches several wins each season. Xiong, is the 2 time defending Angler of the Year and has won 3 AOY titles in the past 4 seasons. Born in Califor

OKA Event #5: 4 Lake Slam Preview

The Oklahoma Kayak Anglers season continues and swings back towards central, Oklahoma in a 4 lake road runner which now includes: Sportsman, Wetumka, Prague, and Holdenville lakes. This event was originally planned for Sportsman, Wetumka, and Prague Lakes. However, due to previous events the OKA is expecting another large turnout and added Holdenville Lake. Make no mistake these 4 lakes have been responsible for some giant bass caught out of a kayak. With this big bass mentality in mind this tournament may be an early summer Home Run Derby.  Sportsman lake located near Seminole, Oklahoma has 15 miles of shoreline with grass and many chunk rock banks. Sportsman, also known as Lake Seminole isn't as popular for giant bass as the other 3 lakes but still has the potential for a giant. The lake has an honor box and launch fee of $5.  Amenities Link:  https://www.travelok.com/listings/view.profile/id.7175 Wetumka lake is a small lake that packs a punch. This 169 acre lake is a popular pl

Toadfest Recap: Classy Massey Drops 116"

Life is what you make it and so is tournament kayak fishing. Gear purchased, research done, money spent, and fish caught cannot match the friendships, bonds, and life changing experiences one can forge by this remarkable sport. OKA angler Josh Massey is a living, breathing example of the words previously stated. This stories headline reads: Classy Massey Drops 116, However, there is much more to this story than meets the eye.  Josh Massey is a 31 year old combat veteran who just recently relocated to Okmulgee, OK and was in a rough spot as 2020 began. Massey had just left a 10 year relationship and to make matters worse all his fishing poles and tackle had been stolen out of his truck. "Needless to say things were not going my way. I got back to church before Covid-19 hit and started a new road to Christ. With no girlfriend and being a disabled veteran I figured I would turn all the negative in my life into a positive with fishing." And that is exactly what Massey did, hittin
