2021 OKA Season Opener at Lake Eufaula Preview

The Oklahoma Kayak Anglers 2021 Season Opener at Lake Eufaula is here and it will be a giant of a tournament! Anglers will compete for Angler of the Year points, Newcomer of the Year points, as well as door prizes provided by OKA sponsors. Also, anglers who are B.A.S.S. Nation or KBF members will have their first chance to accrue B.A.S.S. AOY points or grab 2022 KBF National Championship invites. Regardless of the reason for competing, all anglers will have their work cutout for them on this 102,000 East Central Oklahoma fishery.  


Last season the OKA set an attendance record at the 2020 Season Opener on Lake Murray with 76 anglers competing on a clear windy day. Now with the decline of covid-19, the OKA hopes to smash the 76 angler record by reaching the 100 angler mark. "100 anglers for a live event would be a milestone for the OKA and its anglers." says OKA President Avery Metcalf. Metcalf went on to say " The top payout would be a big, big bonus to the winner and we could payout through 10 spots as well." 

There are also many perks to fishing an event with the OKA which include: Angler camaraderie, competitiveness, and 2021 scheduled lakes that provide excellent fishing, and scenery to the angler. Moreover, the OKA has several added incentives to its competitions that any angler can enjoy. Door prizes are given away at the awards at the end of each event normally at a local restaurant to fill the empty belly of anglers. This event the OKA will have a catered awards at Hangin 8 BBQ in Eufaula following tournament hours. Also, anglers who have a current KBF membership and place in the top 3 in any OKA trail event will receive 2022 KBF National Championship Invites. Anglers looking to qualify for the 2022 Bassmaster Kayak Classic will have an opportunity to do so through the OKA AOY.
   


Lake Eufaula in East Central Oklahoma is a massive 102,000 acre reservoir that spans Haskell, McIntosh, and Pittsburg counties. Eufaula has two primary inflows the North and South Canadian rivers which come to together and make the Canadian River that flows out of Eufaula Dam. Eufaula can be broken down into 5 different style lakes known as: The North Canadian, South Canadian, Deep Fork, Gaines Creek and finally the Central Pool. Eufaula has all three species of black bass and has been known to produce huge stringers of largemouth and smallmouth alike. So much so that MLF angler James Elam caught a 6lb and 8.1LB Smallmouth in the same day on March 21st 2007. We hope to see everyone signed up and ready for the 2021 Opener at Lake Eufaula. Incentives for fishing with the OKA

OKA Angler of the Year: Anglers who score the most points at the end of OKA Trail Season will be the AOY Champion. An anglers best 5 events will be scored for AOY. The AOY Champion will receive the AOY Trophy and $1,000 check.

OKA Newcomer of the Year: Any angler who has competed in 3 or less OKA events will be eligible for NOY. The NOY Champion will receive the NOY Trophy and a $500 Gift Card to Oklahoma/Tulsa Kayak. 

OKA Sportsman of the Year: The Sportsman of the Years is for any angler who displays sportsmanship, fierce competition, and service to the sport of kayak fishing. Anglers will vote on the SPOY through the OKA Survey at the conclusion of the season. The SPOY will receive a plaque, bid to the 2021 All-American Kayak tournament, and a 10KLR Pro-staff position for the 2022 season.   

KBF Qualification: Anglers who have a current KBF Membership and place in the top 3 of an OKA trail event will get 2022 KBF National Championship Invites.

BASS Nation Qualification: The top 5 BASS Nation Members in the final AOY standings will qualify for the 2022 Bassmaster Kayak Classic. Anglers must have a current BASS membership and Oklahoma BASS Nation Membership to be eligible. Proof of membership must be emailed to Oklahomakayakanglers@gmail.com no later than March 20th.

Kayak Tournaments Made Me A Better Angler

I would like to start off by saying that I have fished my entire life, looking back throughout my young life, fishing may have not been the priority at that moment in time but it was the first thing I did when I had nothing else on the schedule. With that being said fishing kayak tournaments without a doubt have made me a better angler, outdoorsman, and fan of the sport of bass fishing. I can remember walking the clear creeks of northeastern, Oklahoma looking for that 5 pounder around the next bend, or riding my bike around the greater Catoosa area trying to find that loaded pond or strip pit. Later I was driving my 1990, 5 speed Ford Ranger to the local hotspot. Fast-forward a few years later and I was off to college at Northeastern State in Tahlequah having the Illinois River and Barron fork Creek at my disposal.
