The first derby of 2021 is upon us and man are we excited to begin the upcoming season! The 2021 OKA Statewide Online Fundraiser will be a chance for new anglers to get their feet wet in kayak tournaments and a chance for seasoned anglers to break the ice on a huge 2021 season. This tournament was originally scheduled for February 20th and 21st on Lake Konawa. However, with the recent winter blizzard the OKA board decided to move the Fundraiser to the following weekend which is February 27th and 28th as well as opening it up to a statewide road runner. This move was to ensure angler safety and participation stays at a premium. With so many giant bass caught from Lake Konawa, the OKA hopes to return to Lake Konawa in future seasons.
The Statewide Online Road Runner concept is often debated and said to not be the best metric for anglers to compete against one another and those anglers may have a good point. However, with the state of Oklahoma offering a plethora of remarkable fisheries for Florida strain and Northern strain largemouth bass as well as cold water oriented smallmouth and spotted bass. That being said, this 2-day derby has a chance to be as competitive as ever. Will the F1s snap out of the cold water and bite or will the derby be won with northerns and smallies? One thing for certain is the angler who adapts to the weather the best will have the greatest chance of winning.
The Fundraiser will also be a chance for the OKA to raise funds for the upcoming season. Expenses that will be paid for through the funds raised will include: Sponsorship banner, AOY, NOY, and SPOY hardware, lake permit payments, website payment, State Championship Swag bags, AOY payment and much more, including a catered awards at the Season Opener. The fundraiser also allows the OKA to payout 85% of entry fees per each event. OKA president Avery Metcalf talks about the fundraising model instead of a membership based tournament trail. "Many trails around the country including some major trails require a membership fee for anglers to compete. Instead, I believe its best for the OKA to keep events open to all and raise funds through a tournament. This allows us to payout more to the angler!" Hope you get signed up! Good luck and tight lines!
