Lake McMurtry Recap: Rays Big Day

OKA Event #7 at Lake McMurtry has come and gone and just like that only one trail event remains. McMurtry had the recipe for a tough event: lots of rain, low water temps, and muddy water. However, OKA anglers always impress and catch the fish needed to fill a limit. One angler in particular always catches the fish that matter and that angler is Jason Ray. Ray who is in the lead for AOY and earlier this season won OKA Event #3 OKIE Road Runner has established himself as the angler to beat going into the season finale September 19th, on Lake Tenkiller.

Jason Ray who resides in Stillwater fishes Sooner Lake for fun and for online events knew this tournament might be hit and miss for some anglers as well as himself. Talking with Jason leading up to the event, Jason would send weather updates and remark how tough the event would be because of the constant rain and cooler temps. None of this seemed to matter as Ray had the morning any tournament angler wants. "The big bass was my second cast then an 18 on my fifth cast, I had 84", by 7AM." If that wasn't good enough Ray kept culling after lunch. "1/2OZ football jig green pumpkin in 12-25ft of water working it extremely slow over brush piles and rock structure."  Ray finished with 91" a good 7.25" ahead of 2nd place. Good work Jason.

The tournament was not the only success for the OKA as over 24 anglers showed up for the awards at the Smokey Pokey Bar and Grill to share stories, jokes, and camaraderie amongst Smokey Pokeys great service, food, and drink. As stated earlier only one regular season event remains. OKA Event #8 at Lake Tenkiller Presented by Nabatak Outdoors inc. on September, 19th. This final event will determine: AOY, NOY and the 40 anglers who will qualify for the OKA State Championship October 17th and 18th on Lake Texoma. Hope to see you there the Sept. 19th! Tight Lines!

The 4 Stages Of A Kayak Tournament With Jason Ray

By Jason Ray Stage 1: Prep Prepping for a tournament is a time that I really enjoy. This usually happens the week before the tournament for me. I spend at least an hour each night before the tournament going through my gear checking line and fine tuning lures.  I also take this time to study the lake especially if I cant pre-fish or if I haven't fished it in the past. I go to Google maps and check the satellite images to find the part of the lake that best suits my style of fishing. Now is also a time to check the weather for the week end and prep for rain, wind or long hot days. The day before is when I get all my snacks and water ready to go. The night before the tournament is always the hardest for me because I'm so excited to go and compete I usually get about two hours of sleep. Even after 4 years of competing I still get butterflies and an excited feeling before tournament day.    Stage 2: The Drive The drive to the tournament is a time to clear your mind of t...
