OKA Event #6 at Birch Lake Preview

The OKA 2020 season trail swings back to Northeastern Oklahoma on a lesser known body of water named Birch Lake. OKA Event # 6 at Birch Lake will be as hotly contested as the weather forecast. Temperatures for this event look to be in the high 90s to low 100s come tournament day. Much is at stake for this event as the AOY and NOY races tighten. Anglers will also have chances at cash prizes for placing in the top 10% of participants, Dobyns Rod for Big Bass, door prizes, and 2021 KBF National Championship invites given the angler place in the top 3 and is a current KBF member.

Birch Lake is a 1,137 acre reservoir located in the Osage and Keystone hills northwest of Tulsa. Big brother Skiatook lake, which was the site of the 2019 OKA State Championship is straight south of the lake and is much the same with rocky sandstone banks, bluffs, standing timber and clear to stained water. Birch can be broken down into two different lakes. The large main lake and the Birch creek part of the lake. The main lake is mostly clear with a tea like tint to the water and loaded with Spotted bass and huge schools of shad. The creek extends northwest of the main lake and has 7 miles one way of fishable water with large bluffs, standing timber and deep drop offs. The lake record largmouth is a 6LB, 22inch bass caught by a young angler way back in 2008. With the longevity of the record and the size of the fish begs the question. Have there been larger bass caught just not reported?

The tournament will be a shotgun start from both Twin Coves and Birch Cove Recreation boat ramps. We ask that anglers who plan on fishing the main lake launch from Twin Coves ramp and anglers who plan on heading up the creek to launch from Birch Cove Recreation ramp.This split will alleviate congestion in parking and loading and unloading. Anglers may launch their kayaks and stay close to the ramp previous to 5:45 AM and at 5:45 AM anglers may paddle or peddle to their starting spots, lines wet will commence at 6 AM. The awards will begin promptly at 3:30 PM at Hatfields Bar and Grill just 2 miles away from the ramp located at 412 Spruce Ave, Barnsdall, OK 74002 and serves american style comfort food. Lakes and Regions of Oklahoma

If you have ever traveled more than 2 hours to fish in the state of Oklahoma chances are you have crossed through, in, and out of several distinct regions of this great state. Oklahoma has 10 ecological regions that include: The Gypsum Hills, Wichita Mountains, Red Bed Plains, Sandstone Hills, Arbuckle Mountains, Red River Plains, Ouachita Mountains, and the Ozark Plateau. OKA Event # 2 Recap: Barham wins at the end

OKA event #2 has concluded and as always the weather and fishing does its best to not cooperate. Anglers experienced low temperatures, intense fog, high winds, muddy water, and post cold front bass. However, top anglers always find a way to catch em' and put a 5-fish limit together. Out of 66 anglers only 116 bass were scored. Moreover, Only 9 anglers were able to fill the limit of 5 bass. As the saying goes, its called fishing and not catching for a reason. Nevertheless, someone always rises to the top to cash out the top payout.  Angler Chance Barham was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma and has been fishing since he could walk. Barham has only been kayak fishing for the last year when he discovered Greg Blanchard's  kayak fishing channel on Youtube. Barham fished at Hominy Lake and used a green pumpkin Senko with the tip dipped in garlic chartreuse and dead-sticked it all day.
