The Oklahoma Kayak Anglers completed their 5th event of the 2020 season this past Saturday and man was it Major League. Anglers from all over the state traveled to 4 small lakes in central, Oklahoma to try their skills at early summer bass. This time of year, normally reserved for the ole American pass time of baseball. However, current events have put a damper on the diamond but certainly not the fishing. Anglers scored 16 bass 20", or better and the top 4 anglers submitting 90", or more. As the scored bass swam sore lipped the OKA hosted the awards at Rudy Alan's Steakhouse in Wewoka. The Steakhouse was as great of an experience for the anglers to get together as the fishing catching home run derby earlier that day.
OKA angler Houa Xiong is no stranger to tournament success as he routinely places high in each tournament and notches several wins each season. Xiong, is the 2 time defending Angler of the Year and has won 3 AOY titles in the past 4 seasons. Born in California, raised in Massachusetts, and now resides in Owasso, OK. "Grew up fishing to put food on the table. Fishing for striper mainly on the east coast. The love for fishing didn't end there. switching from Oklahoma striper and hybrid white bass to bass fishing in 2015. Since then the ninja turtle shirt wast born." Houa Xiong wears his lucky Ninja Turtle shirt for every tournament and it doesn't show any signs up letting up.
Houa and his Shirt
Houa Started off the morning fishing with a frog and a chatterbait with a few misses and small keepers. By 6:30AM he had already moved to an offshore spot with a 10" worm but had no success. " Decided to chase some schooling bass blowing up on shad. Caught a bunch on a senko and small swimbait to catch a small limit." Houa then switched several times between a creek, shallow, and offshore using the wind direction as a guide. Finally as the day was winding down Houa picked up the 1/2 oz black Jackhammer chatterbait again and threw a shallow cast. "Hook set and she came out screaming. I get her to the kayak fast and got her in. Looked like a long fish, maybe the 22" class. Got her on the board and she went 24."
