The Oklahoma Kayak Anglers will be hosting a fundraising tournament February 8th and 9th at Sooner Lake. Proceeds will benefit the OKA general fund for the 2020 season. Costs that will be paid for through this tournament are as follows: Lake tournament fees, plaques and trophies, sponsorship banners, door prizes and yearly website payments. This idea came from new OKA President Avery Metcalf. "If we as an organization can raise funds for direct operating costs that we have year in and year out, we will have the opportunity to raise the tournament payout structure to 80 - 90 %." said Metcalf. "Paying 80 - 90 % would be a huge plus for anglers placing in the top 10 % of the field of a given tournament." The OKA has also decided to raise the tournament entry fee from 35$ to 45$ with 5$ of that fee going to Tourneyx per angler per tournament. This decision was based on 51% of anglers voting to raise the entry fee. An example of the new payout structure at 80% of 40$ per tournament would be as follows:
Sooner Lake is a 5,400 acre lake located in Pawnee and Noble counties. Owned by Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company, better known as OG&E. The lake was completed in 1972 as a cooling reservoir for the OG&E power plant located on the Northwest end of the lake. Water from the Arkansas river is pumped in to the lake and maintained at a normal level. The lake has clear open water with an abundant amount of rock structure. After a quick search online one will find that an 11.4 Largemouth bass was caught by angler Roger Robinson. The Tulsa World writes: "Roger Robinson has caught the new Sooner lake record. At 11.4 Lbs and 26.25 inches long and has a girth of 19.25 inches."
- Avg. 35.5 anglers per live event in 2019
- 35.5 x 40$ = 1,420$
- 80% of 1,420 = 1,136$
- 60% of 1,136 for 1st = 681.6$
- 30% of 1,136 for 2nd = 340.8$
- 10% of 1,136 for 3rd = 113.6$
- Remaining 284$ going to the OKA
The Sooner lake Fundraiser will be held on both February 8th and 9th from 7AM - 3PM on each day. However, anglers can only fish a single day, each angler may choose which day they are to fish. The event will be like any other OKA event. A waiver must be signed and turned into a current OKA board member, the captains meeting must be watched and a comment made on the Facebook live event, the kayak must be fitted with a navigation light visible from 360 degrees and a PFD or Personal Flotation Device must be worn at all times. The anglers best 5 black bass must be measured on a Hawg Trough or Ketch Board measuring device and uploaded to tourneyx. Anglers placing in the top 10% of participants will receive prizes donated by OKA sponsors and purchased from OKA 2019 funds.

Previously the OKA held a trail event in June of 2018. The event was won by Jason Ray of Stillwater. Ray compiled 87.75", while friend and fishing competitor Luke Aryan came in a close 2nd. Matt Penwright was able to haul in a 22.50" bass to win the Big Bass award.
Moving forward the OKA board along with many other anglers would like to see higher payouts to more anglers. This can be achieved by fundraising tournaments. A chance to get out of the house and meet new anglers and test your skills before the 2020 trail gets going! As always tight lines.
